Lot Essay

The present composition, painted when the artist was in his late seventies, concentrates on the theme of the dawn. Judith Collins explains this subject, 'He seldom works in the morning ... He is usually sad at dusk, at the going down of the light. He says he sets his face to the dawn, to the rising of the light, although he does not work early in the morning. 'I know about the dawn without having to be there' (see J. Collins, Cecil Collins, Tate Gallery exhibition catalogue, London, 1989, p. 9)
