Lot Essay

The present work was executed early in the artist's career, when he was still based in the North before he moved to London and reveals the artist's concern with observing the effects of nature. The repository of Arts described Glover's work as 'a purity of colour, an elegance of form and a truth of effect, which ... has never been exceeded.' (Repository of Arts, 1809, p. 492.)

According to a previous catalogue inscription the present work was signed and inscribed with title (on the reverse of the mount).
