Lot Essay

This is probably an early drawing and relates to a sketch in the Victoria & Albert Museum, see R. Hutcheon, Chinnery the Man and the Legend, Hong Kong, 1975, p. 78. The drawing in the Victoria and Albert Museum is dated December 10 1825, about ten weeks after Chinnery's arrival in Macao and depicts the fort from a rocky spot slightly further away than in the present drawing.
