Lot Essay

Lear left Corfu on 4 April 1864 for Athens. He was disappointed with the city as it was not the same as he remembered it. Lear felt that it was too early to return to England and so set off for Crete. Within a week Giorgio his servant had joined him and they left for Khanéa. By the end of May Lear returned to England.

A drawing of Khanéa, dated 22 April 1864 is in the collection of the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design.
