Lot Essay

The entrance to the Tyne at South Shields fascinated Lowry, he wrote 'I'm particularly fond of watching large ships coming in to harbour, or being brought down a river by tugs. I love the Tyne for that reason. It's a wonderful river.' (M. Leber and J. Sandling, L.S. Lowry, Oxford, 1987, p. 69.)
