The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay with an Account of the Establishment of the Colonies of Port Jackson & Norfolk Island, London: John Stockdale, 1789. 4° (283 x 212mm.). Engraved portrait frontispiece of the author, title with engraved allegorical vignette, errata leaf, 53 engraved plates and maps, 6 folding, one double-page, 2-page advertisement leaf at end. (A few plates lightly browned, 2 folding maps torn at centre without loss, 2 plates neatly torn at platemark, some light offsetting of plates, K4 torn without loss, a few spots mainly at margins). Contemporary speckled calf (rebacked with red morocco lettering-piece and galleon motifs stamped in gilt). Provenance: Hans Sloane Stanley (armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, with plate facing p. 150 captioned "Wulpine Opossum", but with title page in the second state. The work includes the earliest printed plan of the settlement at Sydney Cove. Brunet IV, 612; Ferguson 47; Lowndes p.1852; Wantrup 5: "... a key work and essential to any serious collection of Australian books."
