GEORGE PSALMANAAZAAR (1679-1763)

An Historical and Geographical Description of Formosa, London: Daniel Black, 1704. 8° (185 x 111mm.). 16 engraved plates including folding table. (Folding table with short closed tear, occasional light spotting, browning and offsetting). 19th century calf gilt (lightly rubbed and scuffed, upper joints weak). Provenance: illegible early signature on title, later signature of "Petersham" on front free endpaper.

FIRST EDITION. The author, a literary imposter, derived his name from the Assyrian Emperor Shalmaneser and, hungering for public notice, concocted his account entirely from his imagination and borrowed from Varenius's Descriptio Regini Japoniae et Siam (Amsterdam, 1649).

THOMAS PELLOW. The History of the Long Captivity and Adventures of Thomas Pellow, in South-Barbary, London: R. Goadby, [c. 1740]. 8° (165 x 100mm.). Advertisement leaf at front. (D4 repaired, a few leaves with short marginal tears, last 2 leaves with lower margins cropped, some foredges frayed, occasional light spotting). Later boards (rubbed). Second edition.
