Further details
Juan Fernández, a small group of uninhabited islands situated 300 miles off the coast of Chile, became home to the marooned seafarer Alexander Selkirk in 1703 for 4 years. Inspired by Selkirk's account of his stay Daniel Defoe used the tale as a basis for Robinson Crusoe.
