Elgin Marbles, London: Thomas Davison for the author, 1818. Oblong 2° (325 x 393mm.). 50 plates engraved in outline. (Occasional light spotting, some pencil scoring to text). Contemporary half calf, upper cover lettered in gilt (rubbed and scuffed). Provenance: contemporary quotations in ink on front free endpaper.

FIRST EDITION. Blackmer 967; Brunet III, 891. "This is one of the earliest publications to include detailed illustrations of the Elgin Marbles, removed from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin, then ambassador at Constantinople, in 1801 and purchased by the British Government in 1816. Richard Lawrence was a veterinary surgeon by profession but spent three years studying the relics which he considered had been given an indifferent reception by connoisseurs and artists 'of considerable celebrity'" (Blackmer).
