THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH, R.A. (1727-1788)

A Collection of Prints Illustrative of English Scenery, London: Wells and Laporte. Printed by Watts and Bridgewater, [c.1820]. Oblong 2° (303 x 388mm.). 72 soft ground etched plates, many tinted or with some colouring. (Plate 60 with a short tear not affecting etched area, the 2 text leaves creased, occasional light foxing). Contemporary half roan, gilt spine (rather worn). Provenance: Charlotte B. Villiers (inscription 'These prints are the much esteemed gift of George Hibbert Esqr').

A variant of Abbey Life 203, with an extra 12 plates, in a different format and with a different imprint. George Hibbert, the donor of the book to Charlotte Villiers, was the owner of many of the drawings used in this collection. Brunet II, 1444 (mistakenly calling for 73 plates).
