Montlouis, Roussillon
Plan de la Ville et Cittadelle de Montlouis, 1787. French manuscript plan of the fortified citadel of Montlouis in Rousillon, France, west of Perpignan on the River Tet, red and black ink and green, brown, pink and yellow wash on paper (373 x 603mm), with black ruled border, key and scalebar (small unobtrusive stain). Provenance: Ulysse Mathey-Henry, Locle, Neuchâtel, Switzerland (ownership inscriptions).
A decorative and interesting plan of the fortress at Montlouis, designed by Sébastien le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), soldier and military engineer to Louis XIV. Known for his star-shaped forts, Vauban chose this site for a fortress having been impressed by the good health of nearby villagers. It was constructed between 1680 and 1691. One of the highest fortified towns in France, Montlouis stands on the French frontier of the Pyrénées, in the area known as the Cerdagne. Lying on the road between Rousillon and Spain the fortress barred access to the main route to Perpignan. The substantial military barracks survive and are still in use as a military base today; together with a Plan de la ville de Villeneuve de Berg, 1813. Manuscript plan of the town of Villeneuve de Berg in the Ardèche region of France, black ink and green, grey and pink wash on paper (297 x 445mm). (Surface soiling, a few marginal tears.) (2)
