HENRY JOHN ELWES (1846-1922)

A Monograph of the Genus Lilium, London: Taylor and Francis, [1877]-1880. 2° (552 x 375mm). Title within a decorative botanical border, coloured map, mounted albumen-print view of the Himalayas by Samuel Bourne, 48 hand-coloured plates of lilies by W. H. Fitch. (Without the later supplements, occasional light spotting). Contemporary green half morocco gilt (spine faded, rubbed), t.e.g.

The first 7 parts of the supplement were not issued until over 50 years later, between 1933 and 1940, and parts 8 and 9 not until 1960 and 1962. Elwes first became interested in lilies on a visit to the Himalayas. The work as it stood in 1880 included nearly all the lilies then known in cultivation.
