Lot Essay

During the 1920s Diederich turned to Manhattan blacksmith and fellow Hungarian George Bardosy, of the The American Art Metal & Iron Co., to realize his designs for utilitarian objects such as firescreens and torcheres. A period black and white photograph documenting the design for the present firescreen was owned at one time by Mr. Bardosy and then by Diana Diederich Blake, the designer's daughter. The photograph album documenting Bardosy's work for Diederich was sold in these galleries December 6, 2001, lot 1.
