Vice-admiral Jan Hendrik Kinsbergen (1735-1819) was commander in chief of the Russian fleet. On the Black Sea he defeated the Turks in 1773. On the 5th of August in 1781 he fought against the English at the Doggersbank, were he claimed the victory. In his later years he published articles on various marine subjects. During the defence against the French (1793-1795) Kinsbergen became commander-in-chief of the Dutch fleet.
J. Burckmann was born in Bayern in 1761 and worked in Amsterdam were he was a portrait painter. Etched portraits of Burckmann were made by Dutch fellow painters R. Vinkeles and Ch. H. Hodges.
A similar box dated 1791 is in the collection of Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum, Amsterdam (inventory number A 2768 (02)).
