Shaped oval and on four scroll and ball feet terminating in shell ornament, the sides pierced with foliate scrolls and applied with cast gadrooned and shell and grotesque mask border, the overhead swing handle with grotesque bird masks, shells, foliage and scrolls, the centre engraved with a contemporary coat-of-arms, marked on base

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Lowther impaling Vane for William, second Viscount Lowther (1757-1844) and his wife Augusta (d.1838) daughter of John, ninth Earl of Westmorland (1728-1774), whom he married in 1781. Viscount Lowther was later created Earl of Lonsdale in 1802.
