By repute the sitter is believed to be the clergyman, Rev. Melville Lauriston Lee (son of Sir J. Theophilus Lee, G.C.H.), father of The Right Honourable Arthur Hamilton Lee, 1st Viscount Lee of Fareham (1868-1947). Lord Lee was the first Lord of the Admiralty. Lord and Lady Lee gave their estate at Chequers, Buckinghamshire to the nation to be used as a country residence by the Prime Minister.
