A Large Negoro Ewer
Muromachi Period (14th-15th Century)
Of turned and assembled wood, with flat base and slightly everted sides with two circumferential bands above and below the spout, the top rising slightly towards an upturned rim, the lid with a central knop, the up-and-over handle with turned-in corners, three simple bracket feet, the red lacquer on the top much worn revealing the black lacquer beneath, the central band of the side with clear lacquer revealing the wood beneath, the underside also red-lacquered, indistinctly signed with black characters To . . . [East . . .]
