A Sujibachi Kabuto [Helmet with Ridged Bowl]
Edo Period (19th Century)
The crisp sixty-two-plate russet-iron bowl signed inside Munehisa and with invocations to Hachiman, Kasuga Daimyojin, Benzaiten, Marishiten and Daikoku Tenjin, fitted with an unusual detachable four-stage iron tehen-kanamono [mount for the hole at the top], the four-tier komanju jikoro [small rounded neck-guard] also detachable and secured by copper spiral rings which double as attachments for the helmet cord, lacquered red and laced with dark brown sugake [spaced] lacing with fukigaeshi [earpieces] covered in same [ray skin], edged with shakudo [a copper-gold alloy] and bearing a shakudo mon [crest], the interior with a rough stone-coloured lacquer
