A SAWASA WARE TEAPOT
Edo Period (18th Century)
The globular teapot with a low, slightly splayed foot and applied with a gilt rim, handle and spout, the shakudo ground with incised and gilt floral designs around the handle and spout, each side with a large lobed reserve in gilt metal worked with a nanako ground and decorated in shakudo on gilt nanako, within a shakudo border, with pine, cherry and plum designs, interspersed with a tiny boat, a pagoda and other details, completely undercut in some places, the handle and spout with panels of floral decoration in gilt relief on a nanako ground, a band of incised and gilt leaf motifs around the rim, the lid with a band of similar decoration to that on the sides and with a gilt metal fitting in the form of a flowering branch
