Two Early Inro with Figure Designs
Unsigned, Edo Period (Mid-17th Century)
The first four cases, rounded rectangular with attached himotoshi, black lacquer ground, decoration in gold on red takamaki-e, most of the lacquer worn away; the second five cases, black lacquer ground sprinkled with dense fine nashiji, decoration in gold and red hiramaki-e, most of the lacquer worn away, old wear
The first with tokonatsu [wild carnations or pinks] by a garden fence on one side, representing Chapter 26 of Genji monogatari [The Tale of Genji], entitled Tokonatsu and on the other side an attendant holding an umbrella over Prince Genji, representing Chapter 15 of the same work, entitled Yomogyu; the second with a continuous design of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove
