Two Early Four-Case Inro
Both unsigned, Edo Period (Mid-17th Century)
The first lenticular with integral himotoshi, black lacquer ground with a layer of red lacquer, sprinkled with medium-grade gold hirame, decoration in red, silver and gold low takamaki-e, compartments and risers gold nashiji, shoulders and rims gold fundame; the second rounded rectangular with attached himotoshi, black lacquer ground; decoration in gold and red hiramaki-e, compartments and risers gold nashiji, shoulders and rims gold fundame, old wear
The first with a Nio [temple-guardian] on one side and a mokugyo [wooden temple gong] and hossu [priest's ritual whisk] on the other; the second with ten roundels of floral decoration
