An Elaborate Shibayama Openwork Silver Tray
Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
The rectangular border worked in fine openwork silver chrysanthemums and floral scrolls embellished in translucent cloisonné enamels with chrysanthemums, wisterias, peonies, camellias and lilies, the central panel with a silver border, the ground worked in shell and gold foil with geometric and floral designs around two overlapping ivory plaques in the form of tsuba, decorated in shell, stained ivory, gold lacquer and silver with a flower-seller cutting blooms from a tree for a lady and a young girl, the lady holding a branch of cherry, the seppadai of the tsuba each decorated in translucent cloisonné enamels respectively with amaryo dragons and floral designs, the reverse of the panel plain silver with four openwork bracket feet, slight old damage
