A Good Pair of Ivory and Lacquered Wood Figures
Unsigned, Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
Two kneeling ladies in formal dress, one playing a shamisen and the other a koto, in carved and lacquered wood with applied ivory heads, hands and feet, the gold kinji lacquer ground decorated in gold, aokin and coloured hiramaki-e embellished with shell, the heads with incised and stained details, the koto with wood body and metal strings, some old damage and restoration to the musical instruments
