A GEORGE IV GOLD-LINED COMPOSITION SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A PORTRAIT MINIATURE
circa 1825-1830, the miniature English, ca 1825/1830
Rectangular black composition box with rounded corners, the cover inlaid with a glazed rectangular miniature depicting Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1587), facing right in long-sleeved dark dress with white lace cuffs and stiff lace collar, her brown hair adorned with black lace and gauze, within a matted gold frame chased with a garland of vine twisted with a swag of leaves, the sides of the base similarly overlaid with a pierced band of vine twisted with acanthus leaves, matted gold rims and gold thumbpiece applied with vine, the interior gold-lined and inside of lid engraved with inscription 'Copied from an original Painting of Mary Queen of Scotts. done by Zucchero. in the Possession of Mrs. Scott. from whose Family it has never been alienated. Sir William Drury. whose picture is also in the same collection. was Brother to Sir Drue Drury. to whose custody Queen Mary was long consign'd. & on the Marriage of his Widow with Sir John Scott. it is conjectured that the two Portraits came into the Possession of the Scott Family.'
