H.F.S. Morgan, the founder of the Morgan Motor Company, produced his first three wheelers in 1910. This single seater was available with 4hp and 8 hp J.A.P. engines and by 1911 a two-seater became the standard model with a choice of deluxe or sporting bodies. The Grand Prix Aero and Super Sports models followed and achieved outstanding success in competition being actively raced and trialled as well as being used for record-breaking. Production of the three wheeler continued for 42 years.
The car on offer is an example of the replacement for the popular Aero, the Sports which was introduced in 1932. Initially, the model was fitted with a JAP engine, but later Matchless MX, MX2 and MX4 engines were used. In true Morgan tradition, the possible options available were limited to engine choice, and the decision to have two, one, or no doors in the bodywork!
This MX2 Sports was originally registered new in September 1937 in the borough of Leicester County Council. We have so far been unable to ascertain its subsequent history but it is known to have come into the present ownership some thirty years ago.
On inspection the car appears to be complete, including instrumentation, steering wheel controls. The engine has at present been removed from the car, but it is anticipated that the components will be offered with the car at the time of sale.
The ubiquitous Morgan continues to prove ever popular, and in due course with a degree of restoration this will provide its purchaser with exhilarating motoring, three wheel style! There is also an active owner's club supported by enthusiasts the world over who would welcome its return to club circles.
It remains registered on a V5 Document with the DVLA.
