Prince Michael of Kent is well known to the motoring fraternity, and is a keen exponent of many of its aspects, from historic racing to modern road safety. As President of the Royal Automobile Club, and The Brooklands Museum, and Patron of the Veteran Car Club he is a familiar sight at a number of historic motor sport events including the annual London to Brighton run. Ten years ago, he was also part of the successful team that broke the 1,000 mile record for cars over 5,000cc in a 1926 W.O. Bentley Special!

His interests extend from the early days of motoring to today and he is dedicated to supporting modern initiatives to improve our safety on the road. He has been instrumental in encouraging consideration to this and in 1987 set up what is now The Prince Michael International Road Safety Award Scheme, which annually recognises outstanding contributions made by modern car manufacturers to protect drivers.

For the first time, Christie's is delighted to be able to offer a Phantom VI Limousine directly from a Royal Household. This Phantom has resided with His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent since originally purchased by him in 1981.

The car benefits from a rare and very attractive colour scheme of Midnight Blue livery, which carries the Prince's 'M' emblem in gold paint to the doors and a gold coachline stretching along the passenger section of the bodywork and also to the wheel discs. On the roof is an illuminated blue lens nacelle.

The interior is beautifully upholstered and is unusual for having magnolia hide in both front and rear compartments. Its high level of specification includes air conditioning, electric windows, and the original radios to front and rear compartments.

The division features electrically operated division window, two occasional seats which fold neatly into the division, these are each matched with a folding picnic table, and the centre console has been converted to be a document holder. The centre of the division is completed by an Art Deco style clock, which was designed by the Prince.
The car has covered a mere 14,500 miles to the time of inspection by ourselves, and this modest figure combined with the excellent manner in which it has been cared for, have ensured that today it has worn its years very well.

There are minor paint chips in the usual areas of the bodywork that receive the most use, such as door or bonnets shuts, and it was noted that perhaps too much care has seen the paint polish through on the rear bodywork swage lines, but in essence it is in very good order. The interior also mirrors this condition. Throughout its life the Phantom has naturally been maintained by the Rolls-Royce company itself, until the London premises reverted to Derby, and in more recent years by Jack Barclay Ltd. It is tuned to run on unleaded, but is otherwise to its original specification mechanically.

Whilst the limited mileage does account for its condition, it also reflects the amount of the use that the Limousine has received, and been required for, and it is for this reason that the Prince has decided to part with the car.

An exquisite Royal Phantom Limousine.
