THE FIRST AMERICA'S CUP, AUGUST 1851, THE CHALLENGE AND THE RACE FOR SAILING'S MOST COVETED CUP
The challenge of the Americans has at last been accepted. One hundred pounds has been staked, and the scene is set. Cowes is thronged with expectant crowds, the waters of the Solent are studded in every direction with yachts. In the middle of them all lies the America... On the beach and esplanade pretty little groups are strolling about and talking over the great event of tomorrow or criticising the various yachts; some of the ladies being greatly puzzled at that ugly looking America without any nice clean ropes, or anything attractive like the vessels near her, being able to sail so well [back page col 2 -- 39cm. of column space] In a complete issue of: THE TIMES dated 22 August 1851

THE RACE

Is the America first? The answer, Yes
What's second? The reply, Nothing.

A wonderful Victorian day out In the memory of man Cowes never presented such an appearance as last Friday The British see the New York Club as posing no threat to their monopoly of the glory of the manliest and most useful of all sports... At ten o'clock the signal gun for sailing was fired The start was effected splendidly, the yachts breaking away like a field of racehorses; the only laggard was the America. A description of the races follows with the America forging her way through the other yachts "The Yankee" flew like the wind, leaping over, not against the water, and increasing her distance from the Gipsy Queen, Volante, and Alarm every instance On sailing past Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's yacht, the Commodore and crew of the America removed their hats for some minutes -- a mark of respect to the Queen not the less becoming because it was bestowed by republicans... It is with great pleasure I have to state that a protest which had been entered against her receiving the cup on the ground that she had not followed the course marked out, was withdrawn, and that the Messrs Stephens were presented by the Royal Yacht Squadron with the well-won cup [Page 5 cols 4, 5 & 6 -- 147cm. of column space] In a complete issue of: THE TIMES dated 25 August 1851 (2)
