NELSON VISITS BIRMINGHAM, 1802
Lord Nelson, Sir W. and Lady Hamilton etc arrived at this place yesterday and announced at his Hotel that he would honour the Theatre with his presence the same evening. The performances were "The Merry Wives Of Windsor" and "Perouse" for the benefit of Powell, of Drury Lane. The moment Lord Nelson entered the stage box, lighted and introduced by Powell, the shouts of applause were loud, incessant and heartfelt while the band struck up "Rule Britannia" to which the performers and audience gave loud chorus; Nothing had more effect than that part of the play wherein Falstaff making love to Ford's wife (Blissett of the Bath stage, supported the character exceedingly well) - says, "before the best Lord in the land I swear it, pointing his hand towards Lord Nelson's box. The audience instantly caught it and renewed their plaudits; the populace drew their carriage to the Hotel amidst a thousand huzzas, and the glare of numerous lighted torches.
