on government watermarked folio paper dated '1800', addressed Foudroyant at Sea 16th September 1801, acknowledging his letter ..am glad to hear you are safe, however much I lament the loss of the Swiftsure and your individual misfortune.. and praising the reports Hallowell had sent regarding the enemy ships etc., signed Keith and contained within file with historical notes and researches

Lot Essay

On 24th June 1801, Capt. Hallowell aboard Swiftsure was captured by four French ships'of-the-line in an action lasting some 70 minutes. Acquitted from the subsequent court martial, Swiftsure was re-taken four years later at the Battle of Trafalgar.
