Lot Essay

Colonel Edward Hovell Thurlow, Royal [Horse] Artillery, joined the Army as a Lieutenant in June 1856 and was promoted Captain in July 1867. He served in South Africa during the Zulu War of 1879 and also in the disastrous First Boer War of 1881. Promoted Major in September 1875, he retired from active service at the same time although he was later made Honorary Lieut. Colonel.

The only vessel named Hydaspes of circa 1865 which has so far been traced was a large and fast iron full-rigged ship built in Mare's yards at Blackwall, on the Thames, in 1852. Registered at 2,093 tons, she measured 263 feet in length with a 38½ foot beam and spent most of her civilian career running to New Zealand. Since Thurlow's drawings clearly show his ship as a three-masted auxiliary steamship however, it is possible that she was converted to steam at some point although more research is needed to explore this suggestion.
