Built by Vickers-Armstrong at Newcastle in 1947, Nova Scotia was ordered by the Furness-Warren Line for its post-War Liverpool to Newfoundland (St. Johns & Halifax) and Boston service. Registered at 7,438 tons gross, she measured 440 feet in length with a 61 foot beam, and was powered by steam turbines to give a cruising speed of 15 knots. With an ice-strengthened hull and accommodation for 62 First and 92 Tourist class passengers, she entered service in September 1947 and, with her identical sister Newfoundland, maintained regular scheduled sailings until the autumn of 1962 when both ships were sold to the Dominion Line of Nassau in the Bahamas. Re-registered under the Bahamian flag and renamed Francis Drake, she then operated an Australia to Japan monthly service carrying only First Class passengers until 1971 when she was scrapped in Taiwan.
