FLANDIN, Eugène Napoleon (1809-1876) and Pascal COSTE. Voyage en Perse, de MM. Eugène Flandin, peintre, et Pascal Coste, architecte, attachés à l'ambassade de France en Perse, pendant les années 1840 et 1841. Paris: Gide et J. Baudry, [1843-1854].
2 parts in 6 volumes, 2° (618 x 433mm). Half-titles. One double-page engraved map of Asiatic Turkey and Persia and 340 numbered engraved and lithographic plates, mounted on guards. Of the two parts, Perse ancienne contains 240 plates after Flandin, Coste and others, 2 are chromolithographs, one double-page, the rest line-engravings, 10 double-page and one folding; Perse moderne contains 100 tinted lithographic plates by and after Flandin. (Some spotting, mainly at plate margins, but affecting the image of a minority of plates in Perse moderne, plate 46 in Perse ancienne with revenue stamp of the 'Ministère d'Etat'.) Contemporary blue morocco-backed cloth, spines gilt (extremities lightly rubbed).
A SCARCE PUBLICATION, covering both the ancient monuments and the Moslem architecture of Persia in the mid-19th century. The fact that Flandin received the Légion d'Honneur in 1842 for his part in the government-sponsored archaeological mission is a measure of its importance. The 4 volumes of plates, and one volume of text by Flandin, which constitute Perse ancienne were published in 50 parts, Perse moderne in 20 parts, each priced at 20 fr. This folio set is without the 2-volume Relation de Voyage, published in 8vo in 1851. Brunet II, 1280. (6)
