RECHBERG, comte Charles de, and [George Bernhard DEPPING]. Les Peuples de la Russie, ou description des moeurs, usages et costumes des diverses nations de l'Empire de Russie, accompagnée de figures coloriées. Paris: D. Colas, 1812-1813.

2 volumes, 2° (490 x 396mm). Half-titles, titles in French and Russian. 95 (of 96) engraved and aquatinted plates only, printed in colours with touches of hand-colouring, by A. Manz, Scotnikoff, Melnikoff, Hesse, Gros, Adam and others, after E. Karnejeff, extra-illustrated with a colour-printed plate, titled 'Montagne de glace sur l'Irtiche à Tobolsk', and bound at the end of vol.II. (Spotting to half-titles, titles, some text and about 35 plates, lacking the 18th plate in vol.1, the 30th plate in vol.I repaired at plate mark and at lower margin, lower margin of final plate in vol.I reinforced on verso, first leaf of text in vol.II repaired at lower outer corner). Near-contemporary (?)French red morocco gilt, covers with wide decorative borders in gilt and blind, the upper covers with the title and volume number in gilt on the central panel, the lower covers with the Botfield arms, the flat spines in five unequal panels, lettered in two, the others with overall design of a panel of fillets enclosing a sémé of small stylised foliage tools, gilt turn-ins, yellow glazed endpapers, (very light scuffing to corners and extremities).

DE LUXE ISSUE OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK, WITH THE PLATES ENHANCED BY HAND-COLOURING. Like the Lipperheide copy, this copy lacks the 'Casaques du Don' plate called for on the plate list but includes an additional plate of an artificial snow slope. There were three issues of the work: one with plates uncoloured; one with colour-printed plates; and then a de luxe issue with either the plates entirely coloured by hand (Brunet) or, as here, with the plates colour-printed and enhanced by hand-colouring (Colas). Brunet IV, 582; Colas 2491; Lipperheide Kaa 27 (noting the same substitution of plates); Vinet 2323. (2)
