ANDREWS, Henry C. (fl. 1794-1830). Roses: or a monograph of the Genus Rosa: containing coloured figures of all the known species and beautiful varieties, drawn, engraved, described, and coloured, from the living plants. London: printed by R. Taylor & Co., published by the author, 1805-1828.
2 volumes in one, 4° (286 x 226mm). Hand-coloured etched and engraved additional title to vol.I, 121 hand-coloured etched and engraved plates only (of 122), 4 folding, 24 double-page. (Lacking the 'Rosa lurida' plate from vol.II, without the second 'Rosa muscosa alba' plate found in some copies, three of the double-page plates and one other plate shaved with slight loss, some other plates misbound.) Near-contemporary green morocco gilt by J. Wright, covers with a dentelle-style design made up of numerous small stylised flower and foliage tools within a triple fillet and dog-tooth roll border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with elaborate overall repeat pattern of various small arabesque tools centered around a central rose spray, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges.
A COMPLETE COPY OF THIS RARE WORK, FINELY PRESENTED, lacking just one plate from the second volume. Only three copies are listed as having sold at auction in the past twenty five years: all comprised volume I only and were substantially incomplete, containing 66, 73 and 73 plates respectively. 'All of Andrews' publications were a long time being published, in consequence sets complete in the last volumes are rarely found, which is not surprising when it is understood that Andrews himself made the drawings, etched the plates, coloured the impressions and frequently wrote the descriptions himself... One of the most original amd noteworthy English botanical draughtsmen, of whom little is known, outside of his botanical illustrations' (Dunthorne p.171).
