FIRST EDITION of Hooker's monograph on lichens, with 'singularly accurate' descriptions (DNB) arranged in systematic order, accompanied by his own meticulously drawn illustrations. Professor of botany at Glasgow University from 1820 and the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew from 1841, Hooker had been encouraged to pursue botanical studies by Sir James Edward Smith after his discovery of a rare type of moss. He formed his own herbarium from 1816-1820, 'by far the richest ever accumulated in one man's lifetime' (DNB). BM(NH) II, 870; Nissen BBI 916 (wrongly calling for 92 plates); Stafleu and Cowan, 2987.
