REDOUTE, Pierre-Joseph (1759-1840) and Claude-Antoine THORY (1759-1827). Les Roses. Paris: C. L. F. Panckoucke, 1824[-1826].
2 volumes, 8° (235 x 154mm). 159 (of 160) stipple-engraved plates by Chardin, Langlois, Lemaire and others after Redouté, printed in colours and finished by hand. Half-title to volume I bound in as the title to volume II. (Lacking the 'Rosa muscosa' plate in vol. I, some generally light spotting and offsetting to plates, also some spotting of text, one text leaf in vol. I torn at margin.) Early 19th-century green morocco gilt, covers with the Botfield arms enclosed by a floral roll and multiple fillets, gilt-panelled spines with repeated rose motif, gilt strawberry roll turn-ins, gilt edges.
First octavo edition of Les Roses, issued in 40 parts, each with four plates, re-engraved and 'toutes également bien coloriées sous les yeux de M. Redouté.' The text of the folio edition was enlarged, each plate of a rose being accompanied by two to four leaves of letterpress on the manner of cultivation, the names of places where it is found, and of amateur gardeners and nurserymen who had supplied specimens. Lists of rose varieties are also included. The present copy appears to correspond with the issue cited by Stafleu. Later issues were bound in three volumes with appropriately numbered title-pages. Dunthorne 233; Hunt Redoutéana 40; Nissen BBI 1599; Stafleu and Cowan 8749. (2)
