Uniformly bound in contemporary speckled calf, spines in seven compartments with raised bands, the second, third and fourth compartments stained purple and lettered in gilt (very light silver-fish damage to lower margins of covers of the second work, spines slightly scuffed and chipped at head of all four volumes).
A RARE COLLECTION OF RUIZ'S WORKS ON THE FLORA OF PERU AND CHILE. They are amongst the very few Spanish botanical works
that are a match for the magnificent French and Austrian publications of the period. The first work was impounded and later released in 1796 because of a dispute between the authors and Antonio Cavanilles, and as a result is often found bound with the main work. The second work follows through the scheme laid down in the Prodromus, but only as far as the seventh Linnean class. Additional plates (numbered 326-425) were printed but never published. Some of these plates were acquired by botanists and are very occasionally found at the end of vol.III (see Bm(NH) copy). The work is, however, generally considered complete with 325 plates. 'In his youth Ruiz was apprenticed to the pharmacy of an uncle in Madrid, where he learned chemistry and other sciences. In 1772 he began work in the botanical garden at Migas Calientes, where he attracted the attention of the director, Casimiro Gomez Ortega. As a result he was chosen first botanist of a joint French-Spanish expedition to Peru. The expedition, led by Ruiz, ...Pavon..., and Joseph Dombey, reached Lima on 8 April 1778. The objectives of the project were more utilitarian than theoretical, and much of Ruiz's energy was directed towards the investigation of chinchona... Ruiz next turned his attention to the major portion of the expedition's work, the Flora Peruviana. An introductory volume, the Prodromus, appeared in 1794. It generated an intense dispute with... Cavanilles, who claimed to have already described genera that Ruiz and Pavon announced as newly discovered. The first three volumes of the richly illustrated Flora Peruviana described 751 plant species through the first seven Linnaen classes.' (DSB II,p.605).
