SMITH Andrew,(1797-1872). Illustrations of the Zoology of South Africa ... collected during an expedition to the interior of South Africa 1834, 1835, and 1836. London: Smith, Elder, [1838]-1849.
5 parts in 4 volumes, 4° (310 x 236mm). 279 numbered lithographic plates after George Ford, most hand-coloured, some heightened with gum arabic, comprising: Mammalia, 52 plates; Aves, 114 plates; Reptilia, 78 plates; Pisces, 31 plates; Invertebratae, 4 plates. (Some generally light spotting and light browning, heavier spotting to plate 16 of Aves and several plates in Pisces.) Green morocco gilt by White, triple fillets on covers, gilt spine compartments with red morocco lettering-pieces, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance: Frances Mary Richardson Currer (bookplate).
Issued in 28 parts between 1838 and 1849, and described by Mendelssohn as a 'handsome and valuable work' giving 'full particulars of the natural history subjects of South Africa collected by Dr. Andrew Smith's expedition' with illustrations by George Ford 'of a very high order.' Plates 18 and 37 in the Mammalia were not published. The final volume contains both Pisces and Invertebratae. The text to the Vertebratae, by W.S. Macleay, has a separate title reading Illustrations of the Annulosa of South Africa, dated 1838, while the preceding titles are all dated 1849. This is followed by a 28-page appendix, without title, and a final errata leaf, not called for by Nissen. The Sale of Currer's library took place in 1862, showing that Botfield continued to buy right up to his death. Fine Bird Books 108; Nissen ZBI 3868 and IVB 880; Mendelssohn II, p. 327; Zimmer p. 593 ('many new species of birds are described herein'). (4)
