Lot Essay

Dawson's series of rainbow pictures were held in esteem by nineteenth-century critics. The subject had been treated by both Turner and Constable, which may have encouraged Dawson. He executed Rainbow on the Trent in 1850, Rainbow at Sea in 1854 and this painting in 1856, which also bears the title River Scene with Rainbow. The dense wooded banks owe something to Constable; and the revelatory impact of warm sunlight filtering through abating storm clouds recalls Turner. The painting's classicism pays tribute to both English and Dutch traditions of landscape painting.
