THE SITTER, SON OF SIR BOUCHIER WREY, 6TH BT., (FOR WHOM SEE LOT 20) AND HIS SECOND WIFE, ELLEN, DAUGHTER OF JOHN THRESHER, WILTSHIRE (FOR WHOM SEE LOT 21), MARRIED ANNE, ELDEST DAUGHTER OF SIR ROBERT PALK, 1ST BT. OF HALDON, DEVON, ON 14 MARCH 1786.
TAWSTOCK COURT WAS HELD BY A FAMILY CALLED THE MARTINS UNTIL IN THE MID-15TH CENTURY WHEN IT PASSED INTO THE BOUCHIER FAMILY. THE PRINCIPAL SOUTH FRONT OF THE HOUSE WAS REBUILT AFTER A FIRE IN 1787, IN THE FASHIONABLE GOTHIC STYLE OF THAT TIME, WITH ANGLE TURRETS AND A CENTRAL CASTELLATED PEDIMENT. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ELEVATION DISPLAYED IN THIS PORTRAIT, MAY SHOW PLANS FOR THE REBUILDING OF THE HOUSE.
THIS FINE FRAME IS SERPENTINED IN THE GEORGE II 'PICTURESQUE' MANNER, AND CLASPED AT THE CENTRES AND CORNERS BY ASSYMETRICAL SHELL-SCALLOPED CARTOUCHES.
DESMOND FITZGERALD, KNIGHT OF GLIN, ON THE BASIS OF PHOTOGRAPHS, BELIEVES THIS PORTRAIT IS BY GILBERT STUART, ALTHOUGH THE DETAIL AND DEGREE OF TIGHT HANDLING OF THE BACKGROUND IS UNUSUAL FOR THE ARTIST.
