THIS PICTURE IS ONE OF THREE KNOWN VERSIONS OF THIS COMPOSITION. THE OTHER TWO ARE SMALLER AND WERE PAINTED FOR THE DUCHESS OF NORTHUMBERLAND, EITHER DURING OR AFTER MARLOW'S TRIP TO ITALY IN 1765-66, WHICH WAS FUNDED BY THE DUCHESS. STYLISTICALLY, THE COMPOSITION DATES TO THE 1770S AND REFLECTS THE INFLUENCE OF JOSEPH VERNET WHOSE WORK MARLOW HAD SEEN IN THE PARIS SALON IN 1765.
