In this picture, Reinagle has placed colourful and exotic birds in an imaginary storm-swept rocky seashore. Although all of the birds would be associated to a greater or lesser extent with water, they come from a variety of habitats and few of the species would be found in the type of landscape depicted. The birds were probably chosen for their striking colours, their strange appearance, and because few would have been known to the contemporary viewer. The scarlet plumages of the ibises in the centre of the picture, of the flamingoes and of the red-necked red cotingas, are echoed by the fiery corals in the foreground. These corals are accurately drawn but are incongrously shown on the shore, whereas they would usually grow under water. It is probable that Reinagle's sources for the corals and shells would have been illustrations and prints as well as actual specimens.
