A George III silver-gilt and agate dessert-service
Mark of Paul Storr, London, 1817
Comprising twelve three-prong dessert-forks and twelve dessert-knives, the blades chased with husks and trailing quatrefoils, each with agate handle, all in a velvet lined fitted wood case, the case with brass lock plate stamped 'TC Giltspur St', with brass corners and carrying handles, the cover inset with brass plaque engraved with inscription, marked on blades and stems
The knives 8in. (24.8cm.) long
The inscription reads 'THE RT HONBLE THE COUNTESS OF PORTSMOUTH', for Mary-Anne, Countess of Portsmouth, eldest daughter of John Hanson of Bloomsbury Square. She married John, 3rd Earl of Portsmouth as his second wife in 1814. However in around 1820 the Earl's health failed; he was declared insane and the marriage was dissolved by a decree of Chancery in 1828, following seventeen sittings of the Commissioners in Lunacy. The Earl died in 1853 and the estate passed to his brother Newton. (24)
