Lot Essay

The prototype, signed and dated 1641, was formerly in the Kaiser-Friedrich Museum, Berlin, until destroyed in World War II (see H. Posse, Die Gemäldegalerie des Kaiser-Friedrich-Museums. Vollständiger beschreibender Katalog nit Abbildungen sämtlicher Gemälde, Berlin, 1911, I, p. 376, no. 856, illustrated). This version departs from the original only in a few details. Most noticeably, the pipe lying on the floor by the stoneware jug is here omitted and there are no holes in the boards across the doorway on the left side. A number of other replicas and versions are known, including the pictures sold, Lempertz, Cologne, 19 November 1960, lot 462; in the Städtische Sammlungen, Freiburg, and in the Kodella sale, Fischer, Lucerne, 29 August -1 September 1934, lot 1932.
