Lot Essay

Both the form and the decoration of this censer is very rare. A similar but slightly larger example was sold in London, 11 December 1984, lot 214.

Compare with another censer in the Idemitsu Museum of Art which has a ring foot, more widely spaced flower designs and a ring mouth illustrated in Wirgin, Sung Ceramic Designs, pl. 23b
