Lot Essay

Compare the slightly larger Longquan Guan-type vase of this shape from the Clara B. Kimball Collection, now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, illustrated, Oriental Ceramics, vol.10, colour plate 33. Another with a more closely-crackled glaze is also in The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, illustrated by Hsien-Ch'i Tseng and Robert Paul Dart, The Charles B. Hoyt Collection, vol.II, 1972, no.43, and included in the 1952 Memorial Exhibition Catalogue no.226. A further example, of similar size to the present lot, from the Frederick M. Mayer Collection, was sold in these Rooms, 24 and 25 June, 1974, lot 62. Compare also the vase of this size and shape in the British Museum, catalogued as Guan ware, illustrated, Oriental Ceramics, vol.5, colour plate 24, which is also illustrated in Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol.10, pl.40.
