A GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF AMITAYUS
17th/18th Century
Cast seated on a lotus base in vajrasana, the hands held together in dhyana mudra, wearing a five-leaf tiara, beaded jewellery and bracelets inset with turquoise, coral and malachite beads and a floral-hemmed dhoti, the hair highlighted with blue pigments, the gilding with a yellowish-orange patina, some inlay replaced

Lot Essay

Amitayus is the Amitabha as Buddha of long life. Compare the 17th century examples from Outer Mongolia with similar facial features, particularly the straight pointed noses and faces painted with 'cold gold', illustrated by Von Shroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, p. 535
