The insertion of the rectangular lacquer plaque between the two dragons is puzzling. Clearly an alternative to the original concept, its fit indicated that it was made especially for the box, and appears only slightly later than the rest of the cover. The design of a rectangular motif between two ascending dragons harks back to Ming Jiajing designs and it seems reasonable to conclude that the space was intended to house an inscribed piece in lacquer or perhaps jade, which may never have been inserted
