Underglaze-blue Qianlong seal mark and of the period (1736-95)
The round body on an oval foot and with a cylindrical neck flanked by two bracket handles, painted on each side with a bright red dragon surrounding a flaming pearl among blue clouds above breaking waves around the base, the dragon's eyes detailed in blue, it's body with scattered malachite green specks, part of neck and one handle restored

A similar example was sold in these Rooms, 15 June 1999, lot 72. Compare also the example from the Norton Collection, sold in London, 5 November 1960, lot 200, now in the Art Gallery of New South Wales and included in their exhbition of Chinese Ceramics, 1965, Catalogue, no. 116; and another from the Reitlinger Collection illustrated by Jenyns, Later Chinese Porcelain, London 1951, pl. XCIV, fig. 1. Another was exhibited in the Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1994, The Wonders of the Potter's Palette, Catalogue, no. 66. A larger example of this type was included in Splendour of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 9 June - 2 August 1992, Catalogue, no. 139. Two smaller examples were sold in our New York Rooms, 29 November 1990, lot 250 and 22 March 1999, lot 303.
