A PAIR OF HIGHLY UNUSUAL WOOD FIGURES OF HAWKS
18th 19th Century
Each modelled standing on an uneven slab rockwork base, looking directly forwards with its opposite leg slightly raised, the neck, wing and tail feathers naturalistically carved, and the eyes inset in glass, with yellow pigment remaining on the beak and legs, and a little pale pigment on the bodies, age cracks, minor damage
both about 16 in. (40.5 cm.) high (2)

Lot Essay

Although there do not seem to be any published comparable Chinese wood carvings of this type, there is a close similarity in modelling and quality with the enamelled porcelain hawks, which were popular during the second half of the 18th Century. However, a bronze model of a hawk was amongst the cargo on the Dashwood and sold in 1703.
